Hacienda Maria recap

Leaving for breakfast now! Then to meet some more cute kids. Yesterday we met with a family of Alejandra whose oldest daughter, Olga, was unable to go to school. The father got killed trying to emigrate to the US and the family has virtually no source of income. Olga weaves for an income of 1500 gonzalas every two months (or about 175 USD) and the mother and two younger daughters make tortillas which they sell at the nearby school (Hacienda Maria) at lunchtime. The children are so full of life, so eager, so happy, it's easy to see how people fall in love with CoEds mission here! Check out Jeremy's YouTube video for a clip of Alejandra grinding corn to make tortillas.

This sounds like an eye-opening and wonderful experience. Thanks for sharing it with us!

To translate Hoppe's bad spanglish...he means Quetzales, the local currency which is about 1/8 of the dollar, not Gonzales which is someone's name. As the scholarship recipients from Santiago Sac. told us at lunch today, we are cracking them up with our made-up spanish words.
